Nicolas Maduro accuses the United States of having “secret bases” in Essequibo. According to him, these bases would have been designed… to prepare an escalation against Venezuela.

The Venezuelan president also promulgated a law, adopted at the end of March, affirming Venezuela's sovereignty over the Es sequibo. The law designates the territory as a new state of Venezuela, governed from Tumeremo, located in the Venezuelan state of Bolivar. Guyana said it was “gravely concerned” after the adoption of this law, considering that it “is a flagrant violation of (its) sovereignty”
