More than a thousand Arabs demonstrated Friday in northern Israel to protest rampant crime and inaction by Israeli police. Five people were killed in a shooting at a car wash station, amid the worst wave of crime in years.

The local council declared mourning and a three-day general strike, while two of the dead were funeral on Friday at the Melkite Greek Catholic Church in the town of Yafa Nazareth. Israeli Arabs have long complained of discrimination and police failure to address violence and crime in their community, making up about 20 percent of the population.
