A peacekeeper was killed and four others seriously wounded Friday in an attack near Timbuktu in northern Mali, the UN mission MINUSMA said. A patrol "was the target of a complex attack" near Ber where it first hit a mine before coming under fire, the mission reported on Twitter.

The country is plagued by jihadist spread and violence of all kinds, the U.N. mission said. The attack was confirmed to AFP by a spokeswoman for the mission, which is based in the capital, Bamako.
