In 2023, Iran executed at least 853 people, an increase of 43% from the previous year. 481 people were sentenced to death for drug-related offenses, 292 for murder, 22 for rape, 38 for "enmity against God" and/or "corruption on Earth", two for apostasy and one for " armed rebellion against the state" 16 people were executed for unknown reasons.

Amnesty International is calling for the EU and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime to review their cooperation with Iran.
