Hungary prevents EU states from making a joint appeal to Israel. With a letter, the EU countries intended to dissuade Israel from a new military offensive in the Gaza Strip.

Hungary did not accept this, but the statement was released by a diplomat anyway. The EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell called on Israel on behalf of all 27 EU states. The situation in the Middle East will also be a topic at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday. The Hungarian government initially had no comment on Borrell's text.
