Historic defeat of Erdogan's party in local elections. The social democratic CHP won by far in the country's three largest cities, Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir.

The opposition party had great popularity on the west coast of the country, but in these elections it has gained support in provinces in central Anatolia and the Black Sea. The pro-Kurdish left DEM increased the percentage of votes compared to the previous elections, winning in 10 provinces. In Diyarbakir, an election observer was killed and 11 other people were injured in a fight at a polling station.
