Historic defeat of Erdogan's party in local elections. The social democratic CHP won by far in the country's three largest cities, Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir.

The pro-Kurdish left DEM increased the percentage of votes compared to the previous elections, winning in 10 provinces. In Diyarbakir, an election observer was killed and eleven people were injured in a fight at a polling station. In the city of Mardin, another eleven citizens were injured after an electoral brawl.
