Prominent economist Mehmet Simsek has taken over Turkey's finance and treasury. He has become Minister of Finance and Treasury in a country witnessing inflation, a persistent trade deficit and a national currency that needs urgent measures to rebuild investor confidence.

He served as finance minister between 2009 and 2015, along with a number of other executive positions that brought many strands of the economy to meet. In 2013, he was named the "Emerging Europe Finance Minister of the Year" by Emerging Markets magazine.
