The late Sheikh of Al-Azhar Abdel Halim Mahmoud led an integrated project to apply Islamic law instead of man-made laws. Several months before the outbreak of the October 1973 war, the date of the war had not yet been set.
Despite the influence that the imam enjoyed that made him stand as a match for the president of the republic, nothing was achieved from his project in the end except to amend the second article of the constitution so that Islamic Sharia would become the main source of legislation.
