"Mako" is inspired by the accident of the Egyptian ferry "Salem Express", which sank in mid-December 1991 near the coast of the city of Safaga in the Red Sea. The film stars a group of artists, most notably: Basma, Nicholas Moawad, Nahed El Sebaei, Munther Rayahna, Faryal Youssef, Amr Wahba, Mohamed Mahran, and Sarah El Shamy.
The story revolves around documentary film director Rana Bahjat (Basma), who seeks to achieve her dream of presenting an award-winning documentary.
