Republican Congressman George Santos was indicted in federal court in New York on 13 counts on January 6, 2023. The charges include wire transfer fraud, theft of public funds, false declarations of interests, money laundering.

The maximum for such charges is 20 years in prison. The indictment also accuses him of defrauding donors for his election campaign by transferring $50,000 in contributions to his personal bank account. The money collected illegally would have been used to pay for luxury clothes, the indictment says.
