Fulgence Kayishema, 62, is accused of having played a leading role in the massacre of more than 2,000 Tutsi refugees in a church in 1994. The 62-year-old was, until his arrest on Wednesday, one of the last four fugitives wanted for their role.

He appeared impassive in the dock, prayer book in hand. He denied having participated in the genocide, saying: "I played no role" in what he called a "civil war at the time"
