Fires or explosions killed 164 people in Spain in 2020, one less than in 2019. Of these, 119 took place in homes, which recorded an average of 47 fires per day.

Among the fires with the highest number of fatalities are also three recorded in nursing homes. To these figures we could add the number of people killed by fires in other residential buildings such as senior residences, student residences or prisons. And in substandard housing such as shanties, industrial or abandoned buildings occupied by indigent or homeless people.
