Pope Francesco on Sunday issued an urgent appeal to welcome migrants to Hungary. He called for them to "open the doors" during a religious ritual for tens of thousands of people in Budapest.
The message was repeated throughout his visit to Hungary, in an indirect criticism of Hungarian nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's policy of exclusion. The pope warned of the danger of rising nationalism in Europe, but put him in the context of the gospel, saying closed doors were painful and contrary to the teachings of Christ.
