The Paris counter-terrorism prosecutor has opened an investigation into the attack. Three security personnel and two visitors, one of them a Frenchman of Tunisian origin, were killed.

The attack took place in the vicinity of a synagogue on the island of Djerba in southeastern Tunisia. The annual visit season to the Ghriba Synagogue, Africa's oldest synagogue, attracts hundreds of Jews from Europe and Israel to the island, 500 kilometers from the capital Tunis. The prosecution said in a statement that it had opened "an investigation on charges of murder in connection with a terrorist group"
