Former minister Robert Badinter, who abolished the death penalty in France, dies. Badinter was in charge of the Justice portfolio from 1981 to 1986.

His father was arrested in Lyon by the Gestapo in 1943 during the Second World War, and deported to the Sobibor extermination camp, where he was murdered. The current head of Justice, Éric Dupond-Moretti, highlighted that Badinter had been a "visionary and brave" minister who "embodied our Republic and its values"
