Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo may approve the transit of nuclear weapons after the country joins NATO. Orpo emphasized that the country, when applying to join the alliance, had already decided that there would be no restrictions on membership.

Helsinki's policy on this issue will be determined by the autumn. In October 2023, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that NATO military bases and strike weapons could appear on the territory of Finland and Sweden after joining the alliance. Russia's Foreign Ministry said nuclear facilities in Northern Europe would become legitimate targets in the event of a direct conflict.
