At least 200 million girls and women have been victims of sexual mutilation. 30 million girls are at risk of being so over the next ten years.

Majority of them live in 30 countries in Africa and the Middle East. It is estimated that 5% of these mutilated women live in Europe. The pace of progress in ending female genital mutilation remains too slow and is failing to keep up the rate of population growth, says Claudia Cappa, head of the Child Protection and Development Unit at Unicef.
