Sheikh Hibatullah Akhundzada is the leader of the Taliban movement in Afghanistan. He controls all government departments, and the appointment and dismissal of any official is solely his authority.

The interim government - which the movement announced weeks after it took power in August 2021 - is headed by a council of ministers consisting of former Taliban officials or loyal to it. The Taliban calls its government the “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan”; It is the title of the first regime that the movement established in the 1990s.
