Egypt's population growth rate decreased from 2.6 percent in 2017 to 1.4 percent in 2023. The number of births during 2023 amounted to about two million, a decrease of 7 percent compared to the previous year 2022.

The population increase in Egypt, about 60 percent of its population of about 106 million people, falls below or near the poverty line. The birth rate fell from 5.6 children in 1976 to 3 children in 2008, while the use of contraceptives rose from 18.8 percent to 60.3 percent.
