Egypt and Turkey begin a new chapter in their relations. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi welcomed his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Cairo for the first time since taking power in 2013.

The two men signed several agreements, both pleading for "a new stage in relations" and diplomatic cooperation in the Middle East and Africa. Egypt and Turkey support two rival governments in Libya and have only recently reconciled on the Sudanese issue - commercial relations have remained good: Ankara is Cairo's fifth commercial partner.
