Ecuador called the storming of the Mexican embassy a defense of its sovereignty. The arrest of the country's former vice-president Jorge Glas in the building of the diplomatic mission was a necessary measure.

Earlier, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador instructed the country’s Foreign Ministry to sever diplomatic relations with Ecuador. The Mexican Foreign Ministry noted that diplomats were injured during the stormed of the Mexico Embassy in Ecuador. “We defend national sovereignty, no impunity... after abusing the immunity and privileges granted to the diplomaticMission in which Jorge Glas was located, and granting him diplomatic asylum, his arrest was carried out, contrary to the generally accepted legal framework,” the statement said.
