MEPs adopted on Thursday at first reading a text recognizing the "responsibility" of the State in the chlordecone scandal. The socialist bill was passed unanimously by voters, the majority groups having abstained, and will continue its parliamentary journey in the Senate.

The pesticide was widespread in the banana plantations of Guadeloupe and Martinique until 1993 even though its harmfulness had been known for years. The bill was carried by the Guadelupe deputy Elie Califer.
