The radar can detect a missile at a range of 4,500,<> kilometers, which is equivalent to the distance between southern China and northern Australia.

A Beijing-based radar scientist who is not involved in the giant radar project said that until recently the idea of manufacturing and placing a 30-megawatt radar on a warships was "somewhat science fiction"
