[HIGHLIGHTS] Canada: under the snow, the phenomenon of “zombie fires” is already threatening the coming summer

So-called “winter” fires, also called “zombie fires”, continue to burn underground in Canada. Last summer, like all of Canada, the Northwest Territories experienced the worst fire season in its history.

Random lightning, arson and the El Nino phenomenon do not alone explain the intensity of this summer's fires and the increase in winter fires. The vast majority of fires are caused by lightning from storms, with a small proportion caused by hibernating fires.
