The European Commission has proposed on Wednesday a series of legislative measures to criminalize and harmonize crimes associated with corruption. Among them, convictions for embezzlement have a maximum penalty of five years, whether or not there is profit.

This is above what is contemplated by the Spanish Penal Code after the recent reform promoted by the Government to meet the demands of its pro-independence allies. The initiative belongs to the Commission, but now it passes the ball to the European Parliament and the Council of the EU.
