Border controls in the Schengen area can be significantly extended. If there is a risk of terrorist attacks or organized crime, border controls can be introduced for a period of six months.
However, they should last a maximum of two years, with a possible further extension of one year. Border controls within the EU may be permitted for up to three years in the event of serious threats, it was said on Wednesday. The EU states still have to approve the project, but this is considered a formality.
