Almost 20 percent fewer initial applications for asylum in Germany made in first few months of the year. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser attributes the decrease compared to the previous year as a result of the traffic light policy.

Temporary border controls have prevented 17,600 unauthorized entries since October. Decisions were made on 80,651 initial and follow-up applications from asylum seekers in the first quarter of 2024. At 46.1 percent, less than half received protection status, according to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees.
