The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen arrived in Kiev on Tuesday to show her support for Ukraine in the face of the Russian offensive. "The time has long since come to remove this artificial political uncertainty in relations between Ukraine and the EU," Zelensky said.

Ukraine has been demanding EU and NATO membership for years and has multiplied its requests to Brussels since the Russian invasion. The EU granted Kiev official candidate status in June 2022, but is calling for continued reforms, including anti-corruption.
