According to Alexei Navalny's foundation, there have been talks for almost two years to free the Russian opposition figure through a prisoner exchange. Shortly before his death, a corresponding offer was made to Moscow.

The head of the Navalny Foundation, Maria Pevchik, said in a video published on the YouTube platform on Monday that relevant negotiations were on the home stretch. "With political will it would have been a matter of months, not years," she said in the video. The Russian regime brutally suppressed demonstrations in solidarity with Navalny.
