Security guards in Iran's Kurdish region have apparently opened fire on demonstrators, injuring at least 25 of them. The protests took place on Thursday evening in the city of Abdanan in the province of Ilam in the west of the country.

It was the first major escalation between security forces and demonstrators in months. After the wave of protests in autumn, triggered by the death of the young Iranian Kurdish Jina Mahsa Amini, more and more everyday life had returned in recent months. The state reacted with extreme severity and has since executed seven protesters.
