Dozens of gunmen attacked a police station in northwestern Pakistan, early Monday, killing at least 10 policemen. The attacks precede the elections scheduled for next Thursday, which will mobilize the competing parties.

The gunmen were able to briefly take control of the police station during their attack, which began at approximately 1:30 a.m. local time, and no one announced the announcement. The attack took place in the Dera Ismail Khan area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, near the border with Iran.
