The burning of the library of the Mohamed Omar Bashir Center for Sudanese Studies at Al-Ahlia University left heartbreak and sorrow in the hearts of thousands of students and graduates. Armed gangs destroyed the university and burned its contents.

"What happened is a stabbing of Sudanese memory," says the director of Omdurman National University. The fire also wiped out the collection of the late Hammad Tawfiq, the first post-independence finance minister and a well-known national figure.
