WHO: Monkeypox will not turn into an epidemic

Abdel Nasser Abu Bakr, Director of the Infection Risk Prevention and Preparedness Program at the World Health Organization, stressed that monkeypox will not turn into a global epidemic, noting that 157 confirmed cases of infection have been recorded worldwide.

Abdel Nasser Abu Bakr said: "There has been no mutation of monkeypox and it will not turn into a global epidemic, but what the world sees is a limited spread of some cases of a rare virus, and the organization seeks to determine the reasons for the emergence of these cases in countries other than the home of the virus for the first time."

He explained during a press conference that "the virus is endemic in Central and West African countries and appears and disappears from time to time in the countries of origin due to the presence of animals that transmit the virus in African cases and the emergence of cases in other countries that prompted us to highlight them so as not to increase infection among citizens with the virus."

He added, "The disease has the most deadly strains in Central Africa and the least in West African countries," noting that "the organization stressed the countries of the world the need to monitor the disease to prevent its spread."
