6:52 am: Emergency aid for Ukraine revised upwards
The United Nations on Monday announced a major increase in its emergency appeal for humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
"Financial needs have increased from 2.25 billion (estimated in April) to 4.3 billion," said Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
The April appeal for donations covered the period from March to August but has been extended until the end of the year “due to the worsening of the situation” and the arrival of the cold weather which is looming , he noted.
Since the first emergency appeal launched by the UN, 2.38 billion dollars have already been raised
"More than a quarter of Ukraine's population, 17.7 million men, women and children, will need humanitarian assistance in the coming months, about 2 million more than the estimate of April,” he insisted.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, 11.7 million people in Ukraine received humanitarian aid at least once between the end of February and the end of July.
6:40 am: Zelensky raises the specter of Chernobyl
President Volodymyr Zelensky has raised the specter of the Chernobyl disaster and called for new sanctions against Russia following new strikes at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhia power plant.
“The world should not forget Chernobyl and the fact that Zaporizhia is the biggest power station in Europe.
The Chernobyl disaster (in 1986) is the explosion of a reactor and the Zaporizhia power plant has six reactors,” he said Monday evening in his daily video address.
The site, in southern Ukraine, has been under Russian control since March 4.
It was bombed twice at the end of last week, including near a reactor.
Kyiv and Moscow blamed each other for the strikes.
