September 23, 2021 In 2020, the US experienced the highest increase in homicides since the number of homicides began to be recorded nationwide in 1960: + 29%.

The data will be released on Monday but are already available on the FBI website, as the New York Times writes.

The previous record was 12.7% in 1968, the pivotal year of the civil rights struggle.

The national crime rate - the number of homicides per 100,000 inhabitants - still remains a third below that of the early 1990s.

Data for the current year indicate a slower increase than in 2020.
