"The tragic death of Jordan Michallet leaves the world of rugby in shock," tweeted the National Rugby League, which sent its condolences to the family.
According to a police source, "all the elements suggest three successive suicide attempts, the last having unfortunately succeeded".
Questioned by AFP, the public prosecutor of Rouen confirmed that the hypothesis of suicide was privileged, adding that the player had been found dead after throwing himself from the fourth floor of a building under construction.
An investigation into the cause of death has been opened.
The player was recruited by Rouen in 2018, after starting his career in the Top 14 with Grenoble in 2013.
