Mao Shimada won the women's single free skate at the World Junior Figure Skating Championships being held in Taiwan. He is the first Japanese athlete to win two consecutive championships.

Another Japanese athlete, 13-year-old Rina Uezono, came in third place. He scored the top score of 145.76 in the free skate, and came from behind to win the championship with a total of 218.36. He won last year's World Junior Championship at the age of 14 years and 4 months, breaking Mao Asada's record.
