  • Basque Country.Urkullu announces that it will call the Basque elections in July before a Covid-19 outbreak in the autumn

Hours after the Lehendakari Íñigo Urkullu pointed out this morning that he is considering convening the regional elections in July, suspended by the coronavirus health crises, the government has cooled this possibility. The Minister of Health, Salvador Illa, has assured in an appearance in La Moncloa, after holding an extraordinary Council of Ministers to approve the third extension of the state of alarm, that "hopefully" the elections in the Basque Country and in Galicia, also postponed, "they can be celebrated as soon as possible". But, he added, "the situation of the epidemic will determine it", its evolution and its control.

Due to the spread of contagions, its celebration had to be frozen and Illa, in her usual prudent tone, has pointed out that they will be done when there is "security" and "all the guarantees. little by little to get out of the confinement and resume commercial activity. But the minister has warned the communities today, who are asking for more weight in the decisions, that it is the government that "directs" this process. For now, the only measure of relief is allow the children to walk for an hour from tomorrow.

In line with the Health position, the president of the Xunta de Galicia, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, insisted this Friday that the regional elections at the moment "are not part of the Galician government's agenda". In this way, Urkullu has been unmarked.

Feijóo indicated that this call will depend on two parameters: the situation of the state of alarm and the evolution of the pandemic. "The only thing that can be done is to be prudent and not speculate, since it depends on a health event and the alarm state," he said, after the press conference of the weekly meeting of the Galician government.

In addition, the Galician leader indicated that an electoral date has not even been set and that, before setting it, he will speak with the rest of the political parties in the community, as he promised with them when it was agreed to postpone the electoral appointment scheduled for the last April 5.
