Potsdam / Grünheide (dpa) - The construction of the factory of the US electric car manufacturer Tesla in Grünheide near Berlin threatens delays and thus a later start of production.

The application documents for the project have to be interpreted again.

The reason for this is Tesla's intention to change the permit application for the factory, the state environment ministry announced on Tuesday.

"The amended application also includes the construction and operation of a battery cell production facility," the statement said.

First, the “Tagesspiegel” (online) reported on the reinterpretation of the application documents.

The environmental approval from the state of Brandenburg is still pending. Tesla is currently building at its own risk - through several early approvals. The company had applied for the plant to start production in July 2021. However, this date could be postponed due to the renewed public discussion. State Economics Minister Jörg Steinbach (SPD) Steinbach had considered a delay of around three months for the start to be conceivable in the event that the factory's application documents were to be re-interpreted.

Even if the exact scope of the changes is not yet known by the licensing authority, it is assumed that renewed public participation will be necessary, said the Ministry of the Environment.

"This includes a renewed announcement and interpretation of the documents as well as the opportunity to raise objections," it said in the message.

"Since no more detailed information is available about the type and scope of the planned changes, statements on the further course of the procedure and the duration until a final decision can only be made at a later point in time."
