Tropical Storm Isaias has strengthened to become a Category 1 hurricane heading towards the Bahamas archipelago and Florida in the southeastern United States, hit hard by the coronavirus and where testing centers have been closed in the face of this meteorological threat. The hurricane is advancing with winds at a maximum speed of 130 km / h, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said at midnight local time.

The NHC predicts that the hurricane will strengthen in the next 48 hours. Isaias has already been killed and caused river flooding in the Dominican Republic, where 14 of the country's 32 provinces have been placed on red alert. Florida prepared for the arrival of Isaias with the closure of certain Covid-19 testing centers as of Thursday at the end of the day, "as a precaution" according to the authorities.

A state hit by the coronavirus

This concerns the screening centers managed by the State of Florida, simple tents vulnerable to bad weather. Those of the counties, less numerous, must for their part remain open. Florida, one of the American states where the Covid-19 epidemic is experiencing a sharp increase, recorded 253 deaths on Thursday, a 24-hour record for the third day in a row.

The total number of deaths in Florida since the start of the pandemic stands at 6,586. In addition, nearly 10,000 new cases of contamination with the new coronavirus were diagnosed in one day on Thursday, a level that has been maintained for several weeks. In total, Florida has more than 461,000 detected cases since the start of the pandemic. With 21 million inhabitants, that means that one in 50 people has been infected in the state.
