Hamburg (dpa / lno) - In the decisive phase in the promotion of the 2nd Bundesliga, Hamburger SV has to do without defender Stephan Ambrosius.
The 22-year-old has torn a cruciate ligament in his right knee and is out for several months, the club announced on Wednesday.
Born in Hamburg, he was injured in training on Tuesday, and the bitter diagnosis followed later in the evening.
He had already suffered the same injury in December 2018.
Ambrosius has developed into a regular in third place this season under coach Daniel Thioune and was in the starting line-up 26 times in the previous 30 second division games and formed a stable central defender duo with Toni Leistner until his injury.
He was also planned by DFB trainer Stefan Kuntz for the knockout round of the U21 European Championship.
HSV coach Thioune now has to rebuild his team for Thursday's catch-up game against Karlsruher SC.
Because defensive player Moritz Heyer is also out due to a yellow card suspension.
An alternative to Ambrosius could be Rick van Drongelen.
The Dutchman was out for a long time after his cruciate ligament rupture at the end of last season and only made two appearances.
Most recently, the 22-year-old was substituted on for Ambrosius in the 1-1 draw at Jahn Regensburg just before the final whistle.
