Australia's Jason Day, the 2015 winner, made the best provisional start at the PGA Championship on Thursday in San Francisco, beating two-time defending champion Brooks Koepka and star Tiger Woods by three.

Around 70 golfers still had to start their first round at TPC Harding Park, including Spaniard Jon Rham (world No.2), Americans Bubba Watson, Phil Mickeslon and Bryson DeChambeau.

In the meantime, Day is sure to have had a good day, making a card of 65 or five strokes under par, secured with so many birdies.

The 32-year-old beats a group of eight golfers in 2nd place, including Koepka who hopes to become the second player in history to score a PGA Championship hat trick this weekend after Walter Hagen himself. managed to triumph four years in a row in the 1920s.

The American 6th in the world managed 6 birdies and committed two bogeys to finish at -4. Beside him are his compatriots Scottie Scheffler, Xander Sc Chaudele, Brendan Steele, Bud Cauley, Zack Johnson, Britain's Justin Rose and Germany's Martin Kaymer, also a former winner of the tournament in 2014.

Tiger Woods was right behind that group until his 17th hole, where he finally conceded his third bogey of the day to finish with a 68 (-2) card.

Certainly disappointed not to find himself ambushed a little better, he can be satisfied with what constitutes his best first round in a Major since 2012, all for his second tournament in five months, three weeks after a missed return to Memorial.
