China News Service, September 10. According to Agence France-Presse, official data released by Brazil on the 1st showed that 33,116 forest fires occurred in the Amazon rainforest in August, the highest number for the same month since 2010.

The report also noted that there were 3,358 fires on August 22 alone, the highest single-day number since September 2007.
"The uncontrolled increase in the number of fires over the past four years is closely related to an increase in deforestation," said Napolitano of the Brazilian chapter of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
August is usually the month with the most fires in Brazil's dry season.
In August 2010, there were 45,018 fires in the Amazon, and no August has seen more fires than that number since.
