The maritime authorities rescued on Tuesday in the English Channel, 38 migrants who were trying to reach the United Kingdom. In total, five operations were carried out, according to a press release from the Maritime Prefecture of the Channel and the North Sea.
First aid began around 4 a.m. A British aircraft and a French customs patroller reported to the Gris-Nez regional operational surveillance and rescue center (Cross) the presence of four migrants in a kayak 5.5 km from Calais.
Handed over to the border police
A ferry then indicated shortly before 7 a.m. that an inflatable boat with three migrants was in the Dyck area of Dunkirk. At the same time, a fishing vessel reported a boat with engine failure off Cap Gris-Nez with eight migrants on board. At around 8:30 am, another ship alerted to the presence of three people hanging from a buoy in the Calais channel.
Finally, around 10:30 am, a merchant vessel reported to the Cross the presence of a boat in difficulty 18 km north of Dunkirk with 20 migrants on board. All were brought back to the French coast. Some were hypothermic. They were taken care of by the firefighters and then handed over to the border police.
