Moscow: America is benefiting from the disruption of Nord Stream

Russia said on Thursday that the United States was benefiting from the disruption of two Nord Stream gas pipelines under the Baltic Sea, in comments that escalate a war of words with the West over responsibility for damages that have not yet been explained.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told a press conference that the United States would be able to increase sales of liquefied natural gas if the Nord Stream pipelines were permanently discontinued.

The European Union is investigating the cause of leaks in the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines of Russia's Gazprom, and said it suspected sabotage.

Neither line was in use at the time of the damage.

It is not yet clear who is likely to be behind any deliberate attack on the pipelines, which Russia and European partners have spent billions of dollars on building.

Earlier on Thursday, the Kremlin said it appeared as if a government-sponsored "terrorist" act was behind the damage.

No timeline has been set for the repair of the two pipelines, which sustained four separate ruptures, assuming they can be repaired.

Zakharova also called for the EU investigation to be "objective" and said Washington should "explain its position", referring to a comment by US President Joe Biden in February that if Russia sent troops to Ukraine, "there will be no Nord Stream 2 yet." that".
