Teddy Riner has qualified for the quarter-finals of the Olympics, where he will face world No.1 Russian Tamerlan Bashaev.

The disillusionment, however, is enormous for the French swordsmen, reigning Olympic champions, who were eliminated in the quarterfinals by Japan (45-44).

Teddy Riner's quest continues.

The judo star qualified without a hitch for the quarter-finals of the Tokyo Olympics, where he will have to face the formidable Russian Tamerlan Bashaev, current world No. 1.

Teddy Riner is therefore still in the running for the treble, after his Olympic titles in 2012 and 2016. The disappointment, on the other hand, is immense for the French swordsmen, reigning Olympic champions, who were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Japan (45 -44).

This Friday is also marked by the start of athletics events, the king sport of the Olympics.

5:20 am: the three Frenchmen qualified for the BMX race final.

Joris Daudet, Sylvain André and Romain Mahieu all qualified for the BMX race final, which will pit eight riders in a single race at 12:25 local time (5:25 in France).

Each semi-final pitted eight competitors over three rounds, and the first four were selected for the final.

Daudet finished third in his semi-final.

In the other semi-final, Mahieu finished first and André third, despite a crash due to a collision in the first corner.

5.15 am: huge disillusionment for the French swordsmen, eliminated from the quarters ...

We did not expect it, but then really not at all. The French swordsmen, reigning Olympic champions, were eliminated as soon as they entered the competition, in the quarter-finals, by Japan. Yannick Borel, the last tricolor torchbearer, was surprised and conceded a loss in extremis, 45 touches to 44.

What you missed last night: Teddy Riner in the quarterfinals.

Teddy Riner started his Olympics perfectly by winning his first two fights. The two-time Olympic champion started his tournament with a quick victory by ippon over Austria's Stephan Hegyi. In the next round, Riner was more hampered by the Israeli Or Sasson. At first balanced, the fight turned in favor of the French in its second part and Riner won thanks to a waza-ari. In the quarter-finals, it's a whole other task that awaits him as he will face the formidable Russian Tamerlan Bashaev, world No. 1 heavyweight, vice-world champion and reigning European champion. Riner had beaten him in January at the Doha Masters, the only competition he played this season before the Olympics.
