China News Service, June 2 (Xinhua News Agency) reported that the Guatemalan government issued a decree on May 29 to extend the public disaster that was originally scheduled to end on June 2 for another 30 days.

According to reports, the decree stated that the extension of the state of public catastrophe is because the spread of the new coronavirus in Guatemala is continuing, posing a great risk to people’s lives and health. Extending the period of this state "can allow the government to take relevant health and economic measures to protect the health, well-being and safety of the people."

It is understood that Guatemala entered a state of public disaster on March 5, and then extended it twice.

According to data from Johns Hopkins University in the United States on June 2, the number of people infected with Guatemala's new crown virus has exceeded 5,300, with a total of 116 deaths.
