Benedict Hofidis, former defender of the German national football team, who is crowned with him in the 2014 World Cup, has announced the end of his career as a footballer, for family reasons.
Hovidis, 32, who played the last two years for the Russian Spartak Moscow team, announced his decision in an interview with the German magazine "Der Spiegel".
"I recently traveled with my wife and child in a camping truck to the south of France. I felt the wonderful experience of approaching my son," Hovides said.
"Football has suddenly become unimportant to me. Our child is 21 months old now and unfortunately I haven't had much time with him during my time in Moscow. I have suffered a lot at the family level," Hovides added.
Hovidis said that receiving offers from several clubs would not deter him from his decision, although he described it as "difficult".
"I have loved football until the end. It is difficult to miss this moment, the moment of running on the field amidst full numbers of stands. Something like this can give you a boost for many years. Hovidis participated in 44 games with the German national team and played as a left-back in all the team's matches at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, which crowned Germany.
In Germany, Hovidis joined Schalke, 13, and played for the team until 2017, when he was stripped of the armband by the decision of then-coach Domenico Tedesco, as well as from the team's accounts.
Hovidis moved to Juventus on loan, and then spent the past two years with Spartak Moscow.
"I knew this job was difficult. But I always look at the bright side," Hofides said on the end of his career with Schalke 04.
Hovidis' announcement of his retirement came two weeks after the announcement of Andre Chorle, who also crowned the German national team in the 2014 World Cup, and ended his 29-year-old career.
There are questions about the future of Mario Gotze, who scored the winning goal for the German national team in the 2014 World Cup final, and his contract with Borussia Dortmund has not been renewed.
