On April 22, local time, Japan’s Tokyo Electric Power Company announced that a container containing radioactive waste at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant may have leaked.
In March, TEPCO staff found a gel-like object with a large amount of radiation in the container storage area.
TEPCO will investigate whether there is a connection between the two.
According to a report from Japan's "Asahi Shimbun" on April 23, TEPCO stated that the container is stored in three layers. The top container was corroded due to rust, and water was found inside.
The sides of the two lower containers have been contaminated by radioactive materials, and the uppermost container may have leaked. The outflowing liquid reached the ground after passing through the sides of the lower container.
At present, the relevant containers have been moved indoors for storage, and the asphalt pavement where gelatinous objects have been found has also been repaved.
In the gel-like object, the concentration of radioactive substances that emit beta rays is 230,000 becquerels per gram.
